Smoke alarms

Interconnected smoke alarms, installed and tested

We inspect existing smoke alarms and install suitable interconnected photoelectric alarms to meet the requirements that apply to your property.

Queensland Electrical Contractor Licence 89865

Deadline: 1 January 2027. Every Queensland home must have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms by this date. Homes being sold, leased or re-leased must already comply.

What we do

Smoke alarm services

  • Smoke alarm assessment

Inspection of alarm locations, age, power supply and interconnection to identify any required upgrades.

  • Interconnected alarm installation

Photoelectric alarms interconnected so that when one sounds, they all sound.

  • Hardwired or sealed-battery alarms

We select suitable hardwired (240 V) or 10-year sealed-battery alarms to suit the property's requirements. Existing 240 V alarms must be replaced with suitable 240 V photoelectric alarms.

  • Wired or wireless interconnection

Alarms can be interconnected by cable or wirelessly, depending on the alarms and the building. Wireless interconnection doesn't automatically mean battery-only power — 240 V alarms can also interconnect wirelessly.

  • Rental and sale compliance

Bringing properties in line with the requirements that apply when selling, leasing or re-leasing.

  • Testing and documentation

Testing of installed alarms and their interconnection, with installation details provided for your records.

What Queensland requires

Homes being sold, leased or re-leased must already have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms. From 1 January 2027, the same requirement applies to all Queensland homes, townhouses and units.

Alarms must be photoelectric, comply with AS 3786-2014, be less than ten years old and be interconnected with every other alarm in the home. They must be hardwired to mains power or powered by a non-removable 10-year battery.

  • Photoelectric alarms complying with AS 3786-2014
  • Interconnected so every alarm sounds together
  • In every bedroom, in hallways connecting bedrooms, and on every storey
  • Hardwired to 240 V, or powered by a non-removable 10-year battery
  • Existing hardwired alarms replaced with hardwired alarms
  • Alarms replaced before they reach ten years old

Does your property need a smoke alarm upgrade?

Send through the property details and, if you can, a photo of an existing alarm. We can give you an initial idea of what's needed, but final requirements may need an on-site assessment.

This page is a general summary of Queensland smoke alarm legislation, based on Queensland Fire Department guidance — not legal advice. We'll confirm what applies to your property when we assess it. Queensland Fire Department smoke alarm guidance (opens in a new tab)
